🔴 The death of detainee Abdul-Monim Abdel-Basit due to medical negligence inside his detention facility in Faqous
Al-Shehab Human Rights Center expresses its deep condemnation and denunciation of the death of detainee Abdul-Monim Abdel-Basit Ismail El-Sayed, who was around 40 years old, from the village of Al-Tawila – Faqous Center in Sharqia Governorate, following his suffering from a skin disease resulting from poor detention conditions and deliberate medical neglect.
The detainee had been held in arbitrary detention for over 6 years in what is known as "recycling," and the deterioration of his health condition led to the transmission of infection to other detainees, prompting the facility's administration to isolate him in a solitary cell without providing any significant medical care. As his health condition worsened, he was transferred to Faqous Hospital; however, the medical intervention came too late, and he died early today inside the hospital, with his body still being held at the time of this statement's issuance.
Al-Shehab Human Rights Center holds the Egyptian authorities and the detention facility's administration fully responsible for the death of detainee Abdul-Monim Abdel-Basit, and demands an urgent investigation into the incident and accountability for those involved. It also reiterates its call for the release of all political detainees and the end of systematic violations within detention facilities.
