⚫ Six years of continuous detention… An urgent plea to save the life of Professor Abdelshafi Abdelhay Abdelshafi Al-Banna
Professor Abdelshafi Abdelhay Abdelshafi Al-Banna has been detained since March 9, 2020, which amounts to nearly six continuous years of deprivation of liberty, amidst an urgent plea from his family to save his life due to the deterioration of his health condition.
The family reported that Abdelshafi has been subjected to what is known as the "rotation policy," where he has been implicated in 9 consecutive cases without being granted release, in a blatant violation of the principles of justice and legal guarantees.
During his years of detention, he has been transferred between several detention facilities, including:
▪️ New Valley Prison
▪️ Assiut Prison
▪️ Minya Prison
▪️ He is currently held in Damanhour Prison (Abiadia)
The family expresses deep concern about his health condition, as he has been suffering from a thyroid tumor for six years, which appeared at the beginning of his detention, without any serious medical measures taken, or a medical file opened, or access to necessary examinations and treatment, posing a real danger to his life and physical safety.
It is worth noting that Professor Abdelshafi has a scientific and professional background, as he is:
▪️ Holder of a Bachelor of Arts – Ain Shams University
▪️ Holder of a General Diploma and a Special Diploma in Education – Zagazig University
▪️ A certified trainer in human development
▪️ Holder of a Bachelor of Law – Zagazig University
The Al-Shehab Human Rights Center affirms that the continued detention of Professor Abdelshafi, while ignoring his health condition, represents a serious violation of the right to health and life, and contradicts the Egyptian constitution and international treaties, foremost among them the Nelson Mandela Rules for the Treatment of Prisoners.
The center demands:
▪️ The immediate and independent opening of a medical file for Professor Abdelshafi
▪️ His immediate transfer to a specialized hospital for examinations and treatment
▪️ The cessation of the arbitrary rotation policy against him
▪️ His release, or enabling him to enjoy all his legal and human rights
