🔴 Dozens of detainees continue their hunger strike for the second week inside the “Death Prison” in the New Valley in protest against forced transfer and harsh treatment
Dozens of detainees inside what is known as the “Death Prison” in the New Valley are continuing their open-ended hunger strike for the second consecutive week in protest against their forced transfer from Minya Prison on Saturday, October 4, amid repressive conditions and systematic abuse practiced by the prison administration against them.
The detainees, who have affirmed their commitment to continue the strike until their humanitarian demands are met, are calling for the Egyptian Prisons Authority to consider the humanitarian aspect and the minimum of basic rights and freedoms, in accordance with the internal regulations of prisons that guarantee the placement of inmates in prisons close to their place of residence, out of compassion for their families who endure great hardships for monthly visits.
According to information received by the Al-Shehab Human Rights Center, a number of detainees from Cairo, Giza, and the Delta region have joined the strike in solidarity with their colleagues, affirming that their demands are purely humanitarian and not political, amid the suffering of their families who are forced to travel distances exceeding 1500 kilometers round trip during a severe economic crisis and rising travel costs.
This suffering is compounded by the dangers of the roads leading to the New Valley, where cases of death among the families of prisoners have been recorded during visit trips, including the death of the New Valley Security Director months ago on the same road.
The Al-Shehab Center expresses its full solidarity with the detainees and their families in their legitimate demands and calls on the Egyptian authorities to respect the humanitarian aspect and the principles of human rights by transferring them to prisons close to their place of residence in accordance with the spirit of the law and the internal regulations of prisons.
The center also emphasizes that the continued deprivation of families from regular visits due to the long distances and the hardship of travel constitutes a blatant violation of the right to human and family communication, and represents an unjustified collective punishment both legally and morally.
✍️ The Al-Shehab Human Rights Center renews its call for an immediate response to the detainees' demands and to put an end to their suffering and that of their families, in a way that restores the minimum of dignity and human justice to the reality of Egyptian prisons.
