Second Death in Egyptian Police Stations Within 24 Hours
Tuesday 29 July 2025

🔴 A second death inside Egyptian police stations within 24 hours… Karim Mohamed Abdu is a new victim of neglect and poor detention conditions
The Al-Shehab Human Rights Center expresses its deep concern regarding the death of citizen Karim Mohamed Abdu Badr, approximately 25 years old, inside the detention of the police station in Al-Saf, Giza Governorate, on Sunday, July 27, 2025, under inhumane detention conditions, amidst severe overcrowding and a complete lack of healthcare.
Security forces had arrested Karim and his brother on criminal charges related to an attempted theft of a "tuk-tuk," without clarifying the circumstances of the arrest or revealing his health condition during detention.
It is known that the detention conditions inside the Al-Saf police station are inhumane; people are dying inside due to overcrowding, with a very large number of individuals in a cramped space and no humane care. The smell there is unbearable, and there are contagious skin diseases spreading due to poor hygiene and high temperatures. Additionally, smoking and all types of drugs are present inside the detention, entering with the knowledge of the officers and guards, and everyone is aware and silent. There is no oversight, and there is no respect for the most basic rights of the people inside.
🔸 Karim was buried yesterday in the family cemetery in Al-Saf, amidst a state of grief and shock among his family and relatives. He worked selling dish wire and supported his family through this simple job.
📌 The Al-Shehab Center confirms that this case marks the second death within 24 hours inside detention facilities in Egypt, reflecting the escalating danger within detention places and raising serious questions about medical neglect, torture, and mistreatment.
🔹 We demand an immediate and transparent investigation by the Public Prosecution into the circumstances of Karim's death, a review of the conditions in police stations and prisons, and accountability for anyone found complicit in neglect or violations.
