The death of academic Dr. Nagy El-Barnes, Professor of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at Alexandria University, inside his prison after three years of arbitrary detention without charges.

Al-Shehab Human Rights Center expresses its deep sorrow and condemnation for the death of Dr. Nagy El-Barnes – Professor of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at the Faculty of Dentistry, Alexandria University, and brother of Dr. Hassan El-Barnes – inside his prison at the high-security Badr prison, after three years of arbitrary detention without charges, and under harsh detention conditions that lack the most basic standards of justice and human dignity.

During his years of detention, Dr. El-Barnes was deprived of his most basic legal and human rights, and he suffered from severe medical neglect despite the deterioration of his health condition, which led to his death inside the prison, continuing a horrific scene that is repeated against detainees in Egypt.

Human rights activists and colleagues of Dr. El-Barnes confirm that he was a prominent scientific and academic figure, dedicating his life to serving science and his students, and he was not known to have engaged in any political work or any activity that justifies his imprisonment.

Al-Shehab Center holds the Egyptian authorities fully responsible for his death and demands an urgent and transparent investigation into the circumstances of his detention and death, and accountability for all those responsible for his continued detention and the medical neglect that led to this tragic fate.
