🔴 The continued imprisonment of #AlAhly fans due to sports cheering.. Families appeal for the release of their sons
📌 A number of fans of the Egyptian Al Ahly Club continue to spend long periods in pretrial detention on various charges, with some having been held for over two years without trial, which their families consider a collective punishment merely for supporting their club.
✦ The families confirmed that their sons did not commit any acts of violence or vandalism, and that their only "crime" was expressing their affiliation and love for their club, which does not warrant all these years of imprisonment and suffering that have destroyed their educational and professional futures and cast harsh shadows on their families.
✦ Some of these young people have faced severe violations inside their detention facilities, including deprivation of exercise, visitation, and medical treatment, with some having attempted suicide multiple times due to psychological pressure and poor detention conditions.
📍 Among the notable cases is the young man Mahmoud Gamal Abou-Saraya, who has spent his 28th year behind bars; he was previously arrested in 2019 for attending a football match, and was re-arrested in December 2023 upon his return from abroad, resulting in the loss of his job and residence and the destruction of his future.
⚖️ The families appealed to the Egyptian authorities to include their sons in the presidential pardon lists, in line with official calls to enhance the human rights record, affirming that their continued imprisonment does not serve any public interest but rather increases the scale of human suffering.
