Deportation Threatens Egyptian Imam in Italy

The Al-Shehab Human Rights Center expresses its deep concern regarding the actions taken by the Italian authorities against Egyptian citizen Mohamed Mahmoud Ibrahim Shaheen, which involve the cancellation of his long-term European residence permit and the initiation of his deportation to Egypt, in a move that clearly violates the principle of non-refoulement guaranteed by international agreements.

🔻 Details:

Since November 24, 2025, Shaheen—who has been residing in Turin for nearly twenty years—has found himself facing arbitrary decisions based on unproven allegations, after the Italian Ministry of Interior used Article 13/1 of the Immigration Law to justify his expulsion, claiming that he "poses a threat to public security."

Despite his clean record and positive role in Italian society, where he works as an imam and is known for his initiatives to promote interfaith dialogue, the decision was based on vague accusations, including:

• Adopting "extremist ideology" without evidence

• His participation in a solidarity demonstration for Palestine in May 2025

• A politicized interpretation of a comment he made during a pro-Palestine vigil

He was also detained and transferred to the CPR center in Caltanissetta, away from his family and lawyer, and his request for international protection was denied in a review that lacked justice standards.

This comes amid the Italian government's classification of Egypt as a "safe country of origin," a designation that clearly ignores the reality of human rights violations in Egypt, including systematic torture, arbitrary detention, unfair trials, and the risks faced by those forcibly returned.

🔻 The Al-Shehab Center demands:

• The cessation of the deportation of Mohamed Mahmoud Ibrahim Shaheen

• Enabling him to fully exercise his right to request international protection

• Ensuring that he is not returned to any country that may expose him to the risk of torture or persecution
