The administration of Badr 3 Prison continues its repressive policies against detainees, as part of a systematic approach to persecution, the latest chapter of which involved preventing a number of student detainees from taking their exams, in a blatant violation of their constitutional right to education, guaranteed by national laws and international treaties.
▪️ Suicide attempt in protest against deprivation of education
Detainee Karim Samir attempted suicide in protest against being barred from taking his exams, which necessitated his transfer to the prison clinic for medical assistance, indicating a serious deterioration in the psychological and humanitarian conditions inside the prison.
▪️ Open hunger strike
Detainee Moaz Al-Sharkawy has been on an open hunger strike since December 20, in protest against being denied the opportunity to take his exams, amidst complete disregard from the prison administration for his legitimate demands.
▪️ Collective escalation inside the prison
This coincides with 25 other detainees entering a hunger strike in protest against their continued detention in the "revenue" rooms for over five months in inhumane conditions, in addition to the blocking of cameras inside the cells. It is noteworthy that these detainees have previously experienced enforced disappearance for periods ranging from five to seven years.
▪️ Ongoing wave of protests
Badr 3 Prison has witnessed extensive protests across various sectors for about two weeks, including hunger strikes, blocking of cameras, and banging on cell doors, in protest against the medical neglect policy that has led to the deaths of several detainees, in addition to the administration's obstinacy and refusal to respond to demands, under the direction of National Security Officer Walid Al-Dahshan (known by his alias "Ahmed Fikry").
Demands and recommendations:
Immediate empowerment of all student detainees to take their exams without any conditions.
Urgent and independent investigation into the suicide attempt of Karim Samir and accountability of those responsible.
Immediate response to the demands of the hunger strikers and ensuring their health safety.
End prolonged detention in the "revenue" rooms and improve detention conditions in accordance with the Nelson Mandela Rules.
Stop medical neglect and allow independent doctors to enter.
Call for urgent and unannounced visits by the Public Prosecution and the National Council for Human Rights.
Appeal to local and international human rights organizations for urgent action to stop these violations.
