🔴 Despite acquittal and at the age of 74… Continued arbitrary detention of former Helwan University Faculty of Engineering Dean Dr. Al-Sayyid Shihab al-Din

Al-Shehab Human Rights Center is closely monitoring, with deep concern, the continued arbitrary detention of Professor Dr. “Al-Sayyid Hasan Shihab al-Din” (74 years old), former dean of the Faculty of Engineering at Helwan University, who has been detained since 2013 despite the issuance of a judicial ruling acquitting him.

📌 Key violations and academic mistreatment:

Rotation despite acquittal: After spending years in life imprisonment in the case of “Escape from Wadi al-Natrun,” the Court of Cassation issued a final ruling acquitting him in June 2021. Instead of releasing him, he was “rotated” to a new case (Case No. 786 of 2020).

Isolation and deliberate medical neglect: For 13 years, he was transferred between Al-Aqrab Prison and Badr Prison. He suffered prolonged solitary confinement and complete deprivation of visits, amid a deterioration in his health due to age-related illnesses, diabetes, and hypertension.

Assassination of his scientific career: A prominent academic figure who contributed to advancing scientific research in Egypt and the UAE, his career was ended arbitrarily in 2018 after he was listed on terrorism lists.

⚖️ Al-Shehab Center’s demands:

Immediate and unconditional release of Dr. Al-Sayyid Shihab al-Din after his innocence has been officially established.

Immediate halt to the policy of rotating detainees and closing the file of his arbitrary detention.

Ending solitary confinement and enabling him to exercise the rights to medical care, visits, and family contact.
