Death of Detainee Hamdy Darwish in Custody After His Health Deteriorated

The Al-Shehab Center for Human Rights documented the death of detainee Hamdy Darwish, 51, from Shalqan village in Al-Qanater Al-Khayria, on Sunday, 9 August 2026, in the Care Unit at Badr Medical Center, following an acute deterioration in his health due to his diagnosis with gastrointestinal cancer.

The information documented by the Center indicates negligence and delays in providing medical care and referring him for urgent treatment throughout his period of detention, raising serious concerns about the extent to which he received the healthcare his condition required.

The Center emphasizes that the right to life, physical integrity, and healthcare are fundamental rights of detainees, and that any medical shortcomings or delays in dealing with dangerous medical cases necessitate investigation and accountability.

The Al-Shehab Center for Human Rights calls for:
