Severe beatings and serious injuries inside Minya Prison… 5 detainees at risk

The Al-Shehab Center for Human Rights received an urgent appeal regarding extremely dangerous conditions inside Minya Prison – Rehabilitation 2, the Execution Unit area, amid fears for the lives of five detainees, after, according to the appeal, they were subjected to beatings inside their cells.

According to the information received, a number of security personnel stormed the cells of each of Khaled Askar, Mahmoud Wahba, Mahmoud Abada, Karim Rostom, and Mohamed Drey, and assaulted them with batons, with the beating focused on the head, ribs, jaw, and various areas of their bodies.

The appeal included the names of a number of officers and security personnel whom the families hold responsible for the assault, namely:

1- Ahmed Sidqi

2- Ahmed Al-Kashaf 

3- Ahmed Jamal 

The appeal indicates injuries suspected to be serious, including fractures in Khaled Askar’s jaw, and fractures in the ribs of Khaled Askar, Mahmoud Wahba, and Mahmoud Abada, along with bruises and other injuries, amid fears of internal bleeding or head injuries.

The information also states that the injured were placed in solitary confinement and were prevented from exercising and from receiving visits, amid conflicting reports about where they are being held, raising additional concerns about their health conditions and preventing their families from feeling reassured about them.

The appeal is not limited to the incident of assault; it also included accounts about harsh detention conditions, including solitary cells, the availability of only one blanket per detainee, and the use of plastic bags as pillows, in addition to strict restrictions on bringing food and personal items during visits.

The Al-Shehab Center for Human Rights calls for:

▪️ Urgent medical examination of the detainees and conducting the necessary imaging and tests.

▪️ Ensuring that there is no internal bleeding, head injuries, or undetected fractures.

▪️ Opening an urgent, independent investigation into the assault incidents, and investigating all those whose names were mentioned in the appeal.

▪️ Allowing families and lawyers to check on the detainees, learn about their health conditions, and know their place of detention.

▪️ Stopping any retaliatory measures against detainees or their families due to reporting the violations.

▪️ Ensuring that all detainees receive the necessary medical and humanitarian care.

The Center emphasizes that the safety of the detainees is a responsibility that falls on the prison administration and the competent authorities, and that allegations related to torture, ill-treatment, or deprivation of medical care require immediate and transparent investigation.
