The Al‑Shehab Human Rights Center mourns the death of citizen “Haitham Obeid” inside Tenth of Ramadan Prison Hospital, following a severe and continuous deterioration in his health condition. He had remained in pretrial detention and custody since 2017 pending several consecutive cases.
📌 Details of Suffering and Medical Neglect:
Prolonged pretrial detention: The deceased remained detained for approximately 9 full years in pretrial custody since 2017, in a blatant violation of the maximum limits for pretrial detention.
Serious health complications: He had already been suffering from liver disease. Before long, the conditions of his detention worsened and his health deteriorated further, culminating in kidney failure and tuberculosis contracted inside the prison.
Absence of urgent care: He continued to be held in an environment unsuitable for his illness and was deprived of early specialized treatment; this led to a decline in his immunity and his death inside the hospital.
⚖️ Al‑Shehab Center’s Demands:
Comprehensive and independent investigation: The Public Prosecution is urged to immediately open a judicial investigation to determine the causes of death and assess the availability of the necessary medical care during the period of his detention.
Accountability for those responsible: Identify medical and administrative responsibility for the failure to treat the deceased and hold accountable those responsible for the deterioration of his condition.
Ending prolonged detention: Prevent the authorities from using pretrial detention as a “continuing punishment” without a fair trial or a time limit.
Handing over the body and reports: Inform the deceased’s family immediately of the autopsy status, provide the complete medical reports, and hand over his body to the requirements of burial.
