Continued enforced disappearance of electrician Mohamed Fayez Ahmed Hamdy since 2018 after his detention at the Al-Nahda Police Station in Cairo

Al-Shehab Human Rights Center monitors the continued enforced disappearance of citizen Mohamed Fayez Ahmed Hamdy, a resident of the city of Arish in North Sinai Governorate. He had been working as an electrician on the New Administrative Capital project since 2018, without any disclosure of his place of detention or his fate to date.

According to his family’s statement, Mohamed was arrested from his workplace in the New Administrative Capital and taken to Al-Nahda Police Station in Cairo, where he remained detained for approximately two months. During that time, his wife was able to visit him and check on his condition.

The family added that, after two months, they were shocked by his disappearance from the police station. When they asked about him, they were informed that he had been transferred to one of the security agencies referred to as “the Apparatus,” without any clarification of his new place of detention or the agency responsible for him. Since then, all news of him has completely stopped.

His family has been living through severe human suffering for more than eight years, particularly his mother, who hopes to see him or obtain any information that would reassure her about his life and safety. This is in addition to their child, who was one year and four months old at the time of his father’s arrest, and who has grown up during the years of his absence without being able to see him.

The family said, in part of their account of their suffering: “Even my mother wants to see him or know where he is. And his son has grown up, and he wants to see his father.”

Al-Shehab Human Rights Center expresses its deep concern about the continued enforced disappearance of Mohamed Fayez Ahmed Hamdy, especially since his family was able to visit him during his detention at Al-Nahda Police Station, before his news was cut off after he was transferred to another security agency, according to their statement.

The Center calls on the Public Prosecutor and the relevant authorities to urgently intervene to reveal his place of detention and his fate, and to open a serious and independent investigation into the circumstances of his disappearance following his transfer from Al-Nahda Police Station. It also calls for identifying the entity responsible for his detention, ensuring his physical and psychological safety, enabling his family to visit him and check on him, and releasing him immediately if it is established that he is being held without a legal basis.

The Center also emphasizes that depriving his family of knowing his fate for all these years constitutes extreme human suffering, and it renews its demand to end the crime of enforced disappearance and to guarantee families’ right to know the fate of their relatives.
