🔴 Suicide attempts by detainees expose the lies of the Ministry of Interior
The Al-Shehab Human Rights Center expresses its deep concern regarding the rise in suicide attempts among detainees inside Badr 3 prison, under inhumane detention conditions, which unequivocally confirm that what is happening inside this prison constitutes systematic crimes against humanity.
📌 Today, during one of the court sessions, one of the detainees attempted suicide inside the courtroom cage due to being imprisoned in Badr 3 and being deprived of visits for nearly five years. Lawyer Mr. Nabih Al-Janadi described the scene by saying:
“Losing hope is a dangerous thing, and its consequences will be severe for all of us.”
This incident is not the first of its kind; rather, it is part of a long series of violations documented by human rights organizations, corroborated by firsthand testimonies from inside the prisons, most notably what was reported by the "Egyptian Network for Human Rights" since the opening of Badr 3.
🔴 Badr 3: An updated version of "Scorpion"
Despite the state's promotion and its official media portraying Badr 3 prison as a "qualitative leap" in the prison file, documented facts confirm that it is a direct extension of the repression approach in the highly secure Scorpion prison. The most notable of these violations include:
• Constant light exposure 24 hours a day inside the cells, causing serious psychological disturbances.
• Prevention of exercise, fresh air, and sunlight, threatening the health of detainees.
• Complete deprivation of visits and communication with the outside world for years.
• Severe medical neglect and denial of medication, leading to deaths.
⚠️ Documented suicide attempts inside Badr 3:
📍 July 4, 2025: Dr. Abdel Rahim Mohamed – a cardiologist – attempted suicide in front of cameras inside the cell.
📍 July 5, 2025: Detainees informed the court of collective suicide attempts, which were ignored.
📍 Ahmed Sherif Al-Laythi: Cut his arteries inside the cell and was forcibly rescued, with no official record of the incident.
📍 July 13, 2025: A detainee attempted suicide publicly in front of everyone in court due to complete psychological breakdown.
❌ The Ministry of Interior denies… and reality exposes:
Despite claims of "modernization" and "luxury" inside prisons, the facts and testimonies prove otherwise. The state pursues a policy of isolation, oppression, starvation, and deliberate medical neglect, creating an environment that drives detainees to attempt to end their lives.
📢 The Al-Shehab Human Rights Center holds the Ministry of Interior fully responsible for:
• The serious violations inside Badr 3.
• The alarming rise in suicide attempts.
• Medical neglect and deprivation of basic rights.
🛑 The center demands:
• An urgent and independent international investigation into the violations inside Badr 3.
• Allowing visits and humanitarian communication without restrictions.
• Enabling human rights organizations to visit prisons and document the conditions.
• Holding accountable all those responsible for these crimes that are not subject to statute of limitations.
What is happening inside Egypt's prisons, especially Badr 3, is a crime against humanity
and silence about it is complicity
and accountability is a humanitarian and legal necessity
