🔴 A cry from behind bars.. Women of the 10th of Ramadan prison are pleading against injustice and suffering
The Al-Shehab Human Rights Center received a plea from inside the 10th of Ramadan prison for women, revealing a series of serious violations faced by the detainees there, amidst harsh detention conditions that violate the laws and regulations governing prisons.
The most notable points in the plea:
Deprivation of exercise: Political female prisoners are prevented from going out to get sunlight for long periods, which harms their physical and mental health.
Mixing with criminal inmates: They are forced to be imprisoned with criminal female inmates, which poses a danger and threat to their safety and security.
Restrictions on visits: Strict restrictions are imposed on visits, where families are prohibited from bringing in basic necessities, and the duration of visits is arbitrarily reduced.
A special case monitored by the center:
Journalist Ahmed Sabry Abdel Hamid (35 years old) and his wife Asmaa Abdel Rahman Abdel Qader (33 years old) were arrested on November 20, 2023, from their residence in the 10th of Ramadan city, Sharqia Governorate.
Their children: Hussein (15 years old) and Ahd (6 years old) were left alone at home from 11 PM to 7 AM, in a harsh scene that left a deep psychological and social impact on them.
They were charged with fabricated cases: Case No. 680 of 2020 and Case No. 2369 of 2023, after having previously been acquitted in other cases, while they were subjected to enforced disappearance and re-cycling on new cases.
The husband is currently serving his sentence in Abu Zaabal prison, while the wife is detained in the 10th of Ramadan prison for women, amidst poor conditions and alongside criminal inmates.
The couple has spent nearly two years in pretrial detention in violation of the law, without being allowed to meet or see each other, despite the law guaranteeing this.
The center's position:
These practices represent a blatant violation of human rights, subjecting female prisoners, detainees, and their families to compounded suffering, especially as their catastrophic effects have reflected on innocent children.
The Al-Shehab Human Rights Center demands:
Immediate cessation of these violations.
Ensuring that female prisoners and detainees are granted their legally guaranteed rights.
Immediate release of journalist Ahmed Sabry Abdel Hamid and his wife Asmaa Abdel Rahman, in consideration of their family and humanitarian situation.
Conducting an independent investigation into the contents of the plea and holding those responsible accountable.
Allowing human rights organizations to visit prisons and assess their conditions.
The center emphasizes that the continuation of these violations against women and men detained in Egyptian prisons, particularly in the 10th of Ramadan prison for women, constitutes a humanitarian crime that requires urgent action from the Egyptian authorities and the international community.
