⚫️ A ruling of 10 years of hard labor against a child in a high state security case
The Al-Shehab Human Rights Center condemns the ruling issued by the juvenile court in Benha, sentencing the child Mohamed Emad Mohamed Ali Ibrahim, aged 16, to 10 years of hard labor, based on charges of "leading and financing a terrorist group," in case number 4240 of 2024, high state security investigations, after a trial that lasted approximately 35 days.
According to available information, security forces arrested the child at dawn on August 26, 2024, from his home, before he was subjected to enforced disappearance for 11 days, during which his place of detention was undisclosed, and he was not allowed to communicate with his family or lawyer, until he appeared before the high state security prosecution on September 5, 2024, as documented by the Egyptian Network for Human Rights.
The Al-Shehab Center emphasizes that trying children in cases of a serious security nature, while reporting their enforced disappearance, constitutes a blatant violation of juvenile criminal justice standards, as stipulated in international human rights law, primarily the Convention on the Rights of the Child, which obliges states to provide special guarantees for children and not to subject them to arbitrary detention or cruel or degrading treatment.
The Al-Shehab Center demands:
▪️ A review of the ruling issued against the child Mohamed Emad.
▪️ A serious and independent investigation into the incident of enforced disappearance.
▪️ Ensuring all his legal rights, including care, protection, and fair trial procedures appropriate to his age.
▪️ Halting the prosecution of children in security cases in violation of constitutional and international guarantees.
The Al-Shehab Human Rights Center renews its call for the Egyptian authorities to adhere to their international commitments, respect children's rights, and put an end to violations related to detention and exceptional trials.
