Al-Shehab Human Rights Center condemns the arbitrary arrest of lawyer Ahmed Abu Al-Nasr in Mahalla al-Kubra

Al-Shehab Human Rights Center condemns the arbitrary arrest of Mr. Ahmed Abu Al-Nasr, one of the prominent lawyers in Mahalla al-Kubra, following a post he made on the social media platform “Facebook,” in which he expressed his opinion peacefully and candidly regarding a public situation.

According to the documentation at the center, Mr. Ahmed Abu Al-Nasr was arrested from his office in Mahalla al-Kubra, despite being a well-known legal professional, advanced in age, suffering from chronic illnesses including hypertension, diabetes, and heart diseases, and undergoing regular medical treatment.

He was taken to the Supreme State Security Prosecution in New Cairo, where it was decided to detain him for 15 days pending investigation.

Al-Shehab Center confirms that the arrest and investigation procedures were conducted without notifying the Bar Association, in clear violation of the provisions of the Lawyers' Law, which requires notification of the association and the adoption of specific guarantees when taking any legal action against one of its members.

The center also emphasizes that Mr. Ahmed Abu Al-Nasr does not belong to any political parties or movements, nor does he engage in any political activity, and that what has been attributed to him is merely a peaceful expression of opinion, a fundamental right guaranteed by the Egyptian constitution and international human rights charters.

Al-Shehab Center believes that targeting an elderly and esteemed lawyer merely for expressing his opinion represents a serious violation of freedom of opinion and expression, and sends a threatening message to all those working in the legal field, undermining the guarantees of the rule of law and the supremacy of justice.

Al-Shehab Human Rights Center demands:

• The immediate and unconditional release of Mr. Ahmed Abu Al-Nasr.

• Respect for the legal guarantees established for lawyers, and notification of the Bar Association of any legal actions.

• An end to security prosecutions due to peaceful expression of opinion.

• Enabling him to receive the necessary healthcare, considering his health and humanitarian situation.

The center affirms that freedom of opinion and expression is not a crime, and that the protection of lawyers is a protection of the right to defense and justice in society.
