Death of Mohamed Nagy Shehata, Execution Judge and Prominent Figure in Controversial Political Rulings in Egypt

news Monday 9 February 2026

🔴 The death of Counselor Mohamed Nagy Shahat, the former president of the Criminal Court and the Supreme State Security Court, and one of the most prominent judges who handled political cases in recent years.

Shahat was publicly known by the title "The Execution Judge," due to his issuance of a large number of death sentences in politically charged cases, which sparked widespread local and international controversy.

His rulings faced repeated human rights criticisms due to serious violations of fair trial guarantees, including restrictions on the defense team, and failing to allow lawyers to adequately present legal arguments or sufficiently cross-examine witnesses, according to legal and human rights testimonies.

This death reignites the discussion about the role of the judiciary in political cases, the responsibility to ensure justice and the independence of the courts, and the respect for the constitutional rights of the accused.
