عمر علي begins his 12th year in prison after a life sentence extracted under torture

🔴 For the 11th year in a row.. Detainee Omar Mohamed Ali spends Eid behind bars in an unjust military case

While families share the joy of Eid together, the detention of detainee Omar Mohamed Ali continues, as he spends Eid al-Adha for the eleventh consecutive year behind bars, and begins his twelfth year inside prison, amid a complete absence of physical evidence and ongoing suffering from grave violations.

On the occasion of Eid, Omar’s sister sent an affecting message, saying:

“11 years in prison… and the question remains unanswered: why is Omar imprisoned?”

📌 Details of the tragedy and systematic violations:

Arbitrary arrest: Omar was arrested nearly 11 years ago while walking in the street with two of his friends, during a security campaign targeting another person, and he was taken to one of the premises of Military Intelligence.

Extracting confessions under torture: Omar was subjected to brutal physical and psychological torture, including severe beatings with wires, electric shocks, burning, and being suspended for long periods; to force him to memorize a written text and read it in front of the camera as a “filmed confession.” The video was later used as the only evidence to convict him.

Unjust military trial: The case was entirely devoid of physical evidence or testimony implicating him. Moreover, one witness told the court that he did not even know Omar. Despite that, a life imprisonment sentence was issued against him in May as part of a case that also saw the issuance of 8 death sentences. International organizations—including Amnesty International—described the trial as unjust, calling for it to be retried and for allegations of torture to be investigated.

⚖️ Al-Shehab Center’s position and demands:

Al-Shehab Center for Human Rights affirms that Omar Mohamed Ali’s continued detention, in light of these circumstances and blatant violations, represents the dismantling of the principles of justice and guarantees of a fair trial.

The Center calls for:

Opening an independent and transparent investigation into all violations and torture to which Omar was subjected, and holding those responsible accountable.

Reinstating his trial before his natural judge, while providing all legal and human guarantees, as a step toward his release.
