Security Forces Storm the Home of Activist Mona El-Shazli’s Family in Alexandria

🔴 Cross-border targeting.. “Al-Shihab” condemns the terrorising of the activist “Mona El-Shazli”’s family and its bargaining to halt her activism

Al-Shihab Center for Human Rights is following with deep concern the violations and retaliatory threats to which the family of the Egyptian-British activist “Mona El-Shazli” in Alexandria is being subjected, with the aim of pressuring them into silencing her media and human rights voice.

📌 Details of the assault and terror:

Arbitrary intrusion and search: Security forces stormed the family home at dawn on 19 May 2026, smashed doors, searched and vandalised the apartments, causing intense panic among women and children.

Assault on her mother: The activist’s mother (aged 65) was subjected to physical assault during the intrusion, leading to a deterioration in her health condition.

Security bargaining and threat messages: The activist received unofficial messages bargaining with her to (remove her published materials and stop her human rights activity and media appearances) in exchange for the release of her detained family members and the lifting of restrictions imposed on them.

Digital targeting: At the same time as terrorising her family, El-Shazli’s electronic accounts and messaging applications were subjected to repeated, documented attempts at hacking.

⚖️ Al-Shihab Center’s demands:

The Center stresses that freedom of expression and documenting violations are internationally guaranteed rights that cannot be nullified through intimidation, and it calls for:

An urgent, independent investigation into the incident of the home intrusion and the assault on the activist’s mother, and the prosecution of those involved.

The immediate disclosure of the fate of the detained members of her family, and the end of the hostage-taking and family-based abuse policy.

Stopping cross-border targeting and digital and security pursuits against human rights defenders.
