On the occasion of the International Day in Support of Torture Victims, Al‑Shehab Human Rights Center issues its annual report for 2026, which monitors the conditions of detainees inside prisons and places of detention in Egypt. The report highlights ongoing patterns of torture and violations, foremost among them systematic medical neglect, which turns illness into a tool of punishment and threatens detainees’ right to life and to human dignity.

The report reviews the national and international legal frameworks that criminalize torture and prohibit cruel or inhuman treatment. It also documents the conditions of patients and older persons behind bars, and tracks cases of death and health deterioration resulting from being deprived of appropriate medical care. The report emphasizes that combating torture is not limited to preventing direct abuses; it also includes ensuring the right to treatment and healthcare, and holding accountable all forms of neglect that affect a person’s life and dignity.
