Serious escalation inside Badr 3 prison⦠20 detainees placed in solitary confinement amid deprivation of basic necessities and continued hunger strike
13 October 2026
Al-Shehab Human Rights Center is closely following, with deep concern, the escalating developments inside Badr 3 prison, in light of the continued inspection and stripping campaigns, and the placement of more detainees in solitary confinement cells, amid reports of a deterioration in the living and health conditions of those held, and the intensification of protests within the prisonās different sectors.
According to information received from inside the prison, Sector 4, on the second floor, witnessed an inspection campaign described as violent, led by the new prison investigations chief, Ahmed Owais, who arrived from 15 May prison, with the participation of the investigations inspector officer for the region, Muhammad Shadi. The campaign resulted in some cells being stripped of their contents. Meanwhile, detainees confronted the campaign by banging on the doors and chanting in protest at the measures taken against them.
In an even more dangerous development, Sector 1, at around 2:00 p.m., saw one of the cells on the ground floor being stripped, and the five detainees held in it were placed in solitary confinement, on the pretext that they had set mattresses on fire. As a result, the number of detainees placed in solitary confinement rose to 20 detainees, according to available information.
Information indicates that detainees held in solitary confinement are facing extremely harsh conditions, as they are deprived of essential supplies, including bedding, blankets, clothing, and medicinesāraising serious concerns about their physical and psychological safety.
Suicide attempt and fainting of one of the hunger strikers
In the context of protesting detention conditions and the placement of a number of detainees in solitary confinement, one detainee reportedly attempted to harm himself by cutting the arteries in his hand, according to the information received. Reports stated that the detainee continued bleeding for nearly a full hour without anyone intervening to save him, before he was transferred to the prison clinic to receive the necessary first aid.
This coincided with the fainting of another detainee who had been on hunger strike for six days, prompting his transfer to the prison clinic. This raises growing concerns about the health repercussions of continuing the strike under current conditions.
Protests by detainees also continued, through banging on doors and chants across various prison sectors, from 1:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. The protesters chanted against National Security officer Ahmed Fekry, accusing him of being responsible for escalating the situation and endangering the lives of their fellow detainees.
Al-Shehab Center: We demand urgent intervention to stop the violations
Al-Shehab Human Rights Center stresses that the information reported regarding detaineesā conditions inside Badr 3 prison calls for urgent action to verify the facts, ensure the protection of those held from any harsh or humiliating treatment, and provide the necessary medical care without delay.
The Center calls for the following:
āŖļø Stopping arbitrary acts of abuse and stripping within the prisonās sectors, and ending any practices that expose detaineesā safety to danger.
āŖļø Ending arbitrary solitary confinement for detainees, and enabling them to obtain bedding, blankets, clothing, medicines, and all other essential needs.
āŖļø Providing urgent, independent medical care for detaineesāespecially hunger strikersāmonitoring cases of fainting or self-harm, and ensuring immediate intervention in emergency cases.
āŖļø Opening a serious and independent investigation into the circumstances surrounding the delay in intervening to save the detainee who suffered bleeding, and holding those responsible accountable for any negligence proven to have occurred.
āŖļø Enabling the competent oversight bodies to visit the prison, review detaineesā conditions, and verify the extent of compliance with legal and rights guarantees.
āŖļø Ensuring detaineesā right to submit complaints and peaceful protests regarding their detention conditions, without exposing them to retaliation or collective punishment.
Al-Shehab Human Rights Center warns of the danger of continuing to ignore detaineesā demands, amid the escalation of protests and the deterioration of the health conditions of some of them, and the serious risks that may result for their lives and safety.
The Center renews its appeal to international human rights organizations, the UN mechanisms concerned with human rights, and journalists and politicians, to take urgent action to follow up on conditions inside Badr 3 prison, and to pressure for ensuring respect for detaineesā rights and stopping any violations against them.
Protecting detaineesā lives and safety is a legal responsibility that cannot be disregarded.
