More than 30 months in detention at Wadi El-Natrun Prison… and the detainee’s family warns of suicidal tendencies and calls for providing the necessary care

The court will consider, today Wednesday, 14 October 2026, the third session in the trial of Mohamed Waleed, who has been held at Wadi El-Natrun Prison for more than 30 months, in a case in which he faces charges related to establishing and leading an “armed terrorist” group, despite his disabilities and chronic illnesses that require continuous care and assistance in meeting his daily needs.

Mohamed Waleed’s family has revealed a highly serious deterioration in his health and psychological condition, pointing to the emergence of suicidal tendencies, his suffering from recurrent nightmares and severe pain in his back and spine, which necessitate undergoing physical therapy sessions and surgical intervention, in addition to his inability to attend to his personal needs without assistance.

The family affirmed that the conditions of his detention further intensify his suffering, given his constant need for someone to help him with even the simplest details of his everyday life, and the deprivation of care from his parents—who were accustomed to managing his affairs and assisting him—an issue that has had an extremely negative impact on his psychological state.

Mohamed Waleed’s continued detention, despite his disabilities, chronic illnesses, and special health needs, raises serious concerns about the extent to which the medical and humanitarian care required for him is available inside his place of confinement, particularly in light of what his family has reported regarding the deterioration of his psychological condition and the emergence of suicidal tendencies.

The Al-Shehab Human Rights Center calls for ensuring that Mohamed Waleed receives specialized medical care and the necessary treatment without delay, and for providing conditions of detention that take into account his disability and special needs, along with taking urgent measures to protect his psychological and physical safety, and to guarantee his right to a fair trial while considering his health and humanitarian circumstances.
