Statement to the United Nations Regarding Violations Against Political Prisoners and Prisoners of Conscience in Egypt

His Excellency Mr. Antonio Guterres

Secretary-General of the United Nations

New York – United States of America

September 20, 2025

Subject: Request for the Formation of an Independent International Committee to Investigate Violations Against Political Prisoners and Prisoners of Conscience in Egypt

Excellency Secretary-General,

We, the families of political prisoners and prisoners of conscience in Egypt, are honored to submit this letter to you on the occasion of the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly, under the slogan: "Together We Achieve More: Eighty Years and Beyond for Peace, Development, and Human Rights," believing in the essential role that the United Nations plays in protecting the fundamental rights and freedoms of all people.

The attached report documents serious and systematic violations committed against our loved ones who are detained, in blatant violation of the obligations of the state parties under the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, particularly:

Article 9: which affirms the right of every individual to liberty and security of person, and prohibits arbitrary arrest or detention.

Article 10: which requires that all persons deprived of their liberty be treated with humanity and with respect for the inherent dignity of the human person.

Article 14: which guarantees the right to a fair and public hearing by a competent, independent, and impartial tribunal.

The continuation of these violations not only endangers the rights and dignity of the victims but also undermines the foundations and international standards upon which the United Nations system is built.

Accordingly, we respectfully submit the following requests to you:

To establish an independent and neutral international committee to investigate the documented violations in the attached report.

To ensure that the committee is enabled to have direct access to places of detention and to meet with prisoners and their families without restrictions or obstacles.

To issue binding recommendations that ensure:

The immediate cessation of all violations,

The unconditional release of all prisoners of conscience,

Compensation for the material and moral damages suffered by the victims.

Excellency Secretary-General,

This letter represents a cry for help on behalf of hundreds of prisoners and their families, and expresses our conviction that the 80th session of the General Assembly should be a historic milestone for renewing global commitment to the defense of peace, development, and human rights.

We respectfully request your esteemed consideration.
