Serious deterioration in the health condition of detainee Walid Ahmed Ragab Al-Zandahi inside New Valley Prison
The health condition of detainee Walid Ahmed Ragab Al-Zandahi (49 years old) has deteriorated inside New Valley Prison, following the refusal of the Prisons Authority to transfer him for treatment, after he was forcibly relocated from Minya Prison to Block (4), known as the "prison of death".
Al-Zandahi suffers from chronic rectal bleeding that has worsened despite having undergone previous surgery, amid a complete lack of medical care in a prison that lacks even the minimum therapeutic facilities, posing an imminent threat to his life.
His family confirms that all their attempts to transfer him to a specialized hospital have been met with refusal, under the pretext:
“Political detainees are not permitted to receive treatment,” in clear violation of the constitution, law, and international human rights standards.
His mother, an elderly woman over eighty years old, has been completely deprived of visiting him for years due to the forced relocation and the distance to the prison, which takes about 9 hours to reach, amid rising fears for his life.
The Al-Shehab Human Rights Center calls on the Public Prosecutor to intervene urgently, issue an immediate order for the health release of Walid Al-Zandahi, enable him to receive the necessary treatment, and stop using deprivation of medical care as a tool of punishment.
