⚫ The death of university professor Dr. Ata Youssef Abdel Latif inside Badr Prison (3)
The Al-Shehab Human Rights Center expresses its deep condemnation and concern regarding the death of university professor Dr. Ata Youssef Abdel Latif, a physics professor at the Faculty of Science – Assiut University, inside his detention at Badr Prison (3), due to deliberate medical negligence, after his health condition deteriorated without the necessary care being provided.
Dr. Ata suffered from serious chronic illnesses, including high blood pressure and heart disorders, and despite repeated complaints about the deterioration of his health, he did not receive the urgent medical care required for his condition, which led to a worsening of his health and a delayed transfer to the hospital, where he passed away.
The Al-Shehab Human Rights Center affirms that this death represents a crime of medical negligence and a serious violation of the right to life and health care, and it comes as part of a recurring pattern of deprivation of treatment inside places of detention.
The center demands:
▪️ An independent and transparent investigation into the circumstances of the death
▪️ Holding accountable those responsible for negligence and dereliction of duty
▪️ Ensuring the provision of medical care for detainees, especially the elderly and those with chronic illnesses
▪️ Stopping policies that endanger the lives of detainees
The Al-Shehab Human Rights Center extends its heartfelt condolences to the family of the deceased, affirming its commitment to monitoring and documenting violations and demanding justice and accountability.
